Terms of service

A few things to understand before using OpenDocket.

Last updated

These terms describe use of the OpenDocket website and app. By using OpenDocket, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please stop using the service.

What OpenDocket provides

OpenDocket helps people understand court cases through plain-language explanations, timelines, and links to selected court records. Public case browsing is available without an account. Optional accounts, when available, do not give readers permission to change the shared case library.

Information, not legal advice

OpenDocket is an informational service, not a law firm, court, or official record. Using the service or contacting support does not create an attorney-client relationship. Explanations are not legal advice or a substitute for advice from a qualified lawyer.

Explanations are prepared with AI assistance and can contain errors, omit important context, or be out of date. Coverage is limited to selected available records. A displayed date or case status does not guarantee that every filing or later development has been reviewed.

Check the underlying court records before relying on an explanation. Do not rely on OpenDocket to determine filing deadlines, legal obligations, or what action to take in a legal matter. Statements about allegations or a party’s arguments should not be read as findings by a court.

Accounts and responsible use

Use an email address and sign-in method you control. Keep sign-in codes private and tell support if you suspect unauthorized account access. Do not impersonate others, bypass access controls, interfere with the service, or use it unlawfully.

Account features may allow you to edit your display name, sign out other devices, and delete your account. Shared case information remains available independently of individual accounts. The privacy policy explains account data handling.

Court records and external services

OpenDocket links to third-party records and services to help you check its explanations. Those services control their own content, availability, and terms. A link does not imply endorsement or affiliation.

Source documents, names, marks, and other third-party material remain subject to any applicable rights and restrictions. These terms do not grant additional rights to third-party material.

Availability and changes

OpenDocket is provided as available. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, complete coverage, or error-free explanations. Features and published explanations may change, and access may be restricted to address misuse or security problems.

These terms may be revised as the service changes. The current version and revision date are published here. Nothing in these terms is intended to exclude rights that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
