Privacy policy

What OpenDocket collects, why it is used, and the choices you have.

Last updated

This policy covers the OpenDocket website and app. You can browse public cases without an account. The account information below applies when sign-in is available and you choose to use it.

Information we collect

If you create an account, OpenDocket stores your email address, verification status, display name, profile image when provided, account identifiers, and account creation and update dates. You can sign in with Google or an email code; OpenDocket does not ask for a password.

Google sign-in provides your Google account identifier, email address, name, and profile image. OpenDocket requests only basic identity permissions (openid, email, and profile), not access to Gmail, Drive, or your other Google content. Provider account records may include tokens and their expiry information.

Authentication records include sessions, expiry dates, IP addresses, browser information, verification records, and request counters used to limit abuse. Our hosting services also process technical request information to deliver and protect the site.

If you email support, we receive your email address, message, and any information you choose to include.

How information is used

Account and Google profile information is used to create and identify your account, sign you in, display your profile, and check access permissions. Session and security information helps maintain sign-in and prevent abuse. Support messages are used to respond to your request.

Google account information is not used to generate case explanations or to target advertisements.

Cookies and browser storage

When you sign in, essential authentication cookies keep you signed in and protect the sign-in flow. Sessions last seven days and can renew after a day of activity. Signing out ends the current session. Blocking these cookies may prevent account features from working.

OpenDocket does not currently use page-view analytics or advertising trackers.

Services that process information

Cloudflare hosts OpenDocket and stores its data. Account records are kept in a separate Cloudflare D1 authentication database. Better Auth is the authentication software running within OpenDocket, rather than a separate hosted account service.

Google processes your sign-in when you choose Google. Resend receives your email address and sign-in email content to deliver email codes. Codes are stored as hashes by OpenDocket and expire after five minutes. Email delivery services may retain delivery records under their own policies.

OpenDocket obtains public court records through CourtListener and the Supreme Court website. People work with local agents to prepare case explanations from selected public case material, which may include personal information about people involved in cases. Account profile data is not used to author those explanations.

External source links take you to services with their own privacy practices. Support email is processed by the email services involved in delivering and handling your message.

Retention and deletion

Account profile and linked account records remain until the account is deleted. Where accounts are available, use Delete account on the Account page; you may need to sign in again first. Deletion removes the account, linked sign-in records, and sessions from the active authentication database. It does not remove shared public cases.

Session and code expiry limits how long they can be used; it does not promise that every expired record is immediately erased. Verification records, abuse-prevention records, operational logs, support correspondence, and provider backups can have separate retention. OpenDocket does not currently specify a fixed deletion schedule for these records.

To ask about your information or request deletion if you cannot access your account, email the contact below. We may need to verify that the request is yours. You can also remove OpenDocket access in your Google Account settings; this is separate from deleting your OpenDocket account.

For concerns about personal information in public court material, send the case URL and the specific material involved. Removing an OpenDocket account does not alter court records or copies held by CourtListener or other source services.
